The Zion Chapel Belles jumped ahead early and never looked back in their opening round game of the District Tournament Friday night, routing Headland 16-0. Zion Chapel used stellar performances in the circle from Kinley Parker and Carson Nelson to handcuff Headland to just one hit.
Zion got off to a hot start at the plate, thanks in large part to Faith Dewberry. In the top of the first inning, Dewberry sent a 2-2 pitch deep over the left field fence to get ZC on the board first.
Dewberry would go on to finish the day 3-for-3, with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Zion Chapel knocked in 16 hits as a team.
“They all hit the ball well today,” said head coach Chris Dewberry. “We will need those bats and energy all week to bring it home.”
Zion Chapel scored three in the first and second inning, four runs in the third, five in the fourth and one in the sixth. The early lead allowed for pitchers Parker and Nelson to work comfortably all night.
The lone Headland hit came in the bottom of the sixth on a bloop single by Taysha Evans.
With the win, Zion Chapel advances to the second round versus Ashford at 11 a.m. Saturday.
