A Troy dance program is hoping to inspire teens while keeping them off the street this summer.

Ashlan McCloud, 12, first thought of the idea for “A Step Above” a couple of years ago and said she wanted to design a program centered around the art of dancing. The group performs inspirational numbers that are beneficial to group members, and hopefully those who watch the performances.

McCloud’s mother, Adrena White McClain, said she is thrilled to be heading up the dance crew of eight girls ranging in age from 13 to 15.

“We interact with them and teach them how to dance,” McClain said. “It’s so much more than dance. We teach them how to handle life issues.”

The group of girls works with choreographer Larry Thomas and has already performed at several venues in Troy, including the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Show that featured nationally-known comedians.

The girls are now practicing for a Saturday show at Memorial Hall in Clayton. Aailyah Collins, 13, Amber Bigham, 15, Jakerria Smith, 13, Selenthia McGuire, 15, Talia Collins, 15, Danyzhja Golay, 14, Jamaiya Stallworth and Ashlan McCloud, the group’s captain, will take the stage at 8:30 p.m.

“They work very hard at what they do,” McClain said.

Children and parents interested in joining the dance crew can contact McClain at (334) 372-4428 for more information.
