Saint Paul Senior Pastor Elijah Shafah said that Cooper holds a prestigious position with the A.M.E. churches.

“Dr. Cooper is responsible for making connections on all levels of the global A.M.E. churches,” Shafah said. “It is his responsibility to disseminate and receive volumes of information.”

Prior to his election as general secretary and chief information officer in July 2012, Cooper was pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Atlanta.

“Dr. Cooper pastored Trinity A.M.E. Church for better than 24 years,” Shafah said. “While he was there, Dr. Cooper started a school and a day care center. He is on fire for the Lord and is diligent and thorough in his work for the Lord. We are excited that he chose to accept our invitation.”

Judge Anita Kelly, co-chair of the event, said that Cooper’s coming to Saint Paul A.M.E. Church is an auspicious occasion.

“This will be a spirit filled service, with beautiful and uplifting music from our mass choir and a meaningful and inspiring message from Dr. Cooper,” Kelly said. “We invite everyone to come and worship with us.”

Cooper grew up in the St. Phillip Monumental A.M.E. Church in Savannah, Georgia. He accepted the call to preach at a young age and give his trial sermon at St. Phillip in 1976.

Cooper received his first pastoral church while a student at the University of Georgia in Athens. He served churches in Silaom and Athens, Georgia before pastoring Trinity A.M.E. Church.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Georgia, a master’s degree in practical theology from Regent University School of Divinity in Virginia Beach, Va. and a doctor of ministry from Graduate Theological Seminary in South Bend, Ind.

Following the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service, lunch will be served to those in attendance.
