A source close to the situation confirmed that Tulane wide receiver Wilson Van Hooser is likely to join Troy’s football team as early as this week.
The Baton Rouge Advocate first reported that Van Hooser had asked for release from his scholarship.
Van Hooser, a Montgomery native, is looking to transfer to be closer to his mother, who has undergone several medical procedures. The 6-foot, 192-pound wide receiver should be eligible to play right away due to the fact that he has already received his degree from Tulane.
The Advocate reported that Tulane coaches have reached out to coaches at both Troy and Auburn.
“I needed to make a big-boy decision, because I’m graduating, my older brother is getting married and Fudge (brother and Tulane teammate Walker Van Hooser) is moving into a position he’s really excited about,” Van Hooser told the Advocate. “I need to step up for my family, and I need to be the one to be back in Montgomery (Ala.) to help out as much as I can.”
Van Hooser, a rising senior, has 55 catches for 805 yards and nine touchdowns. During his sophomore campaign in 2011, Van Hooser caught 36 passes for 487 yards and four scores. He averaged over 21 yards on just 11 receptions last year but hauled in five touchdowns.
