After leading Zion Chapel football back from obscurity over the last two seasons, Mike Waters is moving on.

Waters confirmed in a phone conversation on Monday that he had resigned as head football coach of the Rebels as off April 29, and the Coffee County Board of Education approved the action later in the week.

Zion Chapel finished runner-up in the region in 2011 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2005, and hosted a playoff game for the first time since 1991. Waters had 15-26 record at Zion Chapel over the course of four seasons at the helm.

Waters and the Rebels finished the 2012 season at 4-6, one game out of another playoff appearance.

The decision and announcement comes days before Zion Chapel was set to begin spring practice.

Defensive coordinator Bradley Bowers, as well as assistant coaches Lucas Davis, Vaughn Hill and Brad Barton will conduct the spring evaluations while the search begins for a replacement for Waters.

The Rebels have had five different head coaches in the previous ten seasons, with none lasting more than four seasons in charge.

Zion Chapel will compete in 2A Region 3 once again in 2013.

Two region mates, Luverne and Elba, will also have new head coaches in the upcoming season.

Waters said that he has future opportunities, and will announce his decision in the coming weeks.

Zion Chapel has not yet hired a replacement.
