Despite the cold, dreary weather on Friday, the 2013 Pike County Relay for Life was a success.

“We ended up getting just under $100,000 raised by Relay night with $20,000 or so still expected from different teams that are still collecting,” said Jessamyn Boyd, the local representative for the American Cancer Society. “That’s about $120,000 to go toward the fight against cancer.

The event ended up being called about 7 p.m. due to inclement weather, but the rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the teams who came out to support cancer survivors and remember those who lost the battle with the disease.

“I was very impressed with the community,” Boyd said. “Everyone was still very excited to be there. People were smiling and being jovial and decorating their tents. We have a very positive crowd.”

The Relay for Life board will continue to meet through June and then take the month of July off to relax. Then, it’s back to the grindstone for planning for the 2014 Relay.

“If anybody is interested in being on the board next year, I want to hear from them,” Boyd said.
