Charles Henderson set to host Terry Sikes Tournament despite rain

Charles Henderson’s baseball team will open its 2013 home schedule by hosting the annual Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament.

The Trojans are coming off a pair of victories over Jackson High School and G.W. Long High School on Monday.

After advancing to the second round of the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs two straight seasons, the Trojans now drop to Class 4A, but still have the same goals.

“Ultimately, we want to compete for a state title. We have a challenging schedule and will have to play quality baseball win,” Charles Henderson baseball head coach Derek Irons said. “This tournament will be an early measure of where we stand. We have a lot of good team coming in this year and obviously we want to win our own tournament.”

Charles Henderson will play Providence Christian in its first game. That contest will be played on the campus of Charles Henderson High School at 4 p.m. today.

Friday’s schedule will see the Trojans face Northridge at 3 p.m. and Eufaula at 7 p.m. Both of those games will be played at Troy University’s Riddle-Pace Field.

The team will then return to Frazier Field on Saturday for the round-robin finale against Walker at 11:30 a.m.

Weather may be an issue for the tournament, but Irons hopes having two fields will help keep the tournament on track.

“Fortunately, we have a field right up the street (Riddle-Pace) that drains really well,” Irons said. “Hopefully the rain won’t set us back to much and we have a chance to get all the games in.”

Charles Henderson will open the month of March of in style hosting both Dothan and Oak Mountain in a doubleheader on March 2. The Trojans then head north for a tournament in Montgomery hosted at both Paterson Field and Riverwalk Stadium from March 5-9.
