The average cost of gas in Alabama has gone up about 35 cents since last month and is expected to rise more, but the state is still below the national average, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.

The current average in the state is $3.56 for regular gasoline, $3.88 for premium and $4.00 for diesel, according to the report.

Nationally those numbers are $3.73 for regular gas, $4.03 for premium and $4.12 for diesel.

On Monday afternoon, the least expensive gas in Troy was being sold for $3.59 at Pinckard’s on Enzor Road. The most expensive was reported by gasbuddy.com to be $3.76 at Pinckard’s on Three Notch Street. All other stations listed showed gas was being sold at $3.64.

Comparing those numbers to Montgomery reports on gasbuddy.com, Troy gas is higher. The least expensive gas reported in Montgomery Monday afternoon was $3.41 and the most expensive was $3.59

A month ago, Alabama’s average for regular gas was $3.21, which was down from $3.49 a year ago. The highest recorded average price for a gallon of gasoline in the state was $4.05 on Sept. 16, 2008.

California, Hawaii, New York and Maine are at the top of the gas price list with fuel averaging up to $4.28 per gallon.

The current cost of a barrel of crude oil is $95.91 and that’s a big factor in the increase in gas prices, according to analysts. From December to January, the price of oil increased 10 percent, reported the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The price of crude oil accounts for 68 percent of the price of one gallon of gas.

Other factors that cause prices at the pump to rise include refinery closings and speculation.
