Charles Henderson baseball picks up pair of wins to open season

Andalusia – The Charles Henderson High School baseball team opened its 2013 regular season with a pair of victories.

The Trojans knocked off Jackson High School 4-2 before beating G.W. Long 6-2 in the finale at LBW Community College.

In Charles Henderson’s season opener, Houston Mabray pitched a complete game to pick up the victory. Mabray struck out four batter and allowed just one earned run.

With the game scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Charles Henderson scored four runs in the frame to take the lead. Jackson however would answer with two runs in the bottom half to close the gap. The Trojans would hang on after a 1-2-3 seventh.

Chase Smartt finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Joey Denison went 3-for-5 with an RBI while Cole Wilson was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Trojans trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning when the team exploded for five runs to walk away with their second win of the day.

Tripp Blackmon pitched four solid innings as the Charles Henderson starter. Blackmon allowed two earned runs and struck out one. Xavius Burden got the win in relief pitching the final three innings.

Smartt tripled in the fifth inning knocking in a pair of runs. He finished 1-for-3. Denison was 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Morgan Shaver had a pair of hits in the three at bats and scored a run.

The Trojans will next be in action on Thursday as the team hosts the annual Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament. Games will be split between Dozier Field and Riddle-Pace field. Charles Henderson will open against Providence Christian at 4 P.m. on Thursday at Dozier Field.
