The Alabama Forestry Commission and the Pike County Chapter of the Alabama TREASURE Forest Association will give away free trees from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. Feb. 15 on the square in downtown Troy.
“The trees that will be given away are primarily used for wildlife conservations,” said Claire Murphy, local TREASURE Forest member. “However, some ornamental trees will also be given away.”
The trees to be given include Japanese Maple, Crepe Myrtle, Oak Leaf Hydrangia, Sawtooth Oak, Cherry Bark Oak, Nuttale Oak, Shumard Oak, Chickasaw Plum, Green Ash, Blackgum, Red Maple, Red Bud, Persimmon, Bald Cypress and Pondo Cypress.
“It is suggested that the seedlings be put in a pot or protected area until they achieve a larger root system and then transplant them where you want them,” Murphy said. “Those who want the ornamental trees are encouraged to come early because the number is limited and they go fast.”
