The Troy women’s basketball team won its first Sun Belt Conference game of the season with n 68-61 decision over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at Trojan Arena.
The win snaps a 16-game Sun Belt losing streak dating back to the last time Troy hosted ULL on Feb. 4, 2012.
Sarah McAppion, who has now played 104 games in a Trojan uniform and won just 34, scored 16 points in the victory and shot 7-for-8 from the field.
McAppion, in an emotional postgame interview, said she was more proud of this season’s team than any other.
“It has been a long road to get here. We’ve been building and building every day and finally we see the product of that hard work,” the senior said with a tear in her eye. “My college career hasn’t been the best one, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world.”
The win was the first conference victory for first-year coach Chanda Rigby.
“We’ve had to continue to chase something we couldn’t see,” Rigby said. “A lot of teams would have given up by now, but they don’t have the character kids like we have. This groups struggles have not been been from a lack of effort.”
Joanna Harden scored 16 points as well for the Trojans. Freshman guard Ashley Beverly-Kelley scored eight point and led the team in rebounds with eight. She also had six assists.
Troy (4-17) will next face South Alabama on the road on Wednesday.
