Newspaper theft leads to arrest

A man was returned to Crenshaw County to face charges for not paying child support after he was arrested for stealing newspapers from a news rack.

James Thompson, 46, was charged with third-degree theft of property Tuesday about 4:30 a.m.

According to information from the Troy Police Department, a witness reported seeing Thompson take papers from racks at the Piggly Wiggly on Three Notch, a Beeline convenience store and Food World. An officer caught up with Thompson near Food World and initiated a traffic stop.

The officer found a stack of newspapers in the front seat, along with a piece of a clothes hanger, which Thompson said he used to open the news racks.

Crenshaw County authorities picked Thompson up from Troy on an active warrant for failing to pay child support.
