The Troy women’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with Alabama, but ultimately could not keep pace in a 80-71 Crimson Tide victory at Trojan Arena on Saturday.
Troy (2-7, 0-2 Sun Belt) held a slim 51-50 advantage with 11:04 left in the contest, but Alabama (6-3) would use a 13-8 run and poor three-point shooting by the Trojans to claim the win.
The Trojans closed the gap to three, 66-63, on a pair of free throws by Joanna Harden. Alabama then took advantage of several Troy turnovers to pull away late.
Troy would make just 3 of 17 (17.6%) three-point shots.
“The victory wasn’t on the scoreboard today, but there were many victories I saw as a coach,” Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. “We changed up defenses fluidly and did a good job against a very talented team.”
Britney McCloud scored a team-high 23 points for the Trojans. Alabama’s Jasmine Robinson scored 25.
Sarah McAppion scored 13 points while Ashley Beverly-Kelley finished with 11.
Troy shot 41.4 percent for the game while Alabama made just 34.5 percent.
The Trojans will travel to take on Jacksonville on Dec. 18 before returning home and to Sun Belt Conference play against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 21.
