If Hassie Green were any more excited, she would sprout wings and fly.
Green, director of the Troy Nutrition Center, makes absolutely no attempt to hide her excitement about the grand opening of the “brand new” Troy Nutrition Center on Wednesday.
“We’ll have a new place and a new name and I couldn’t be more excited and neither could our seniors,” Green said. “This is more than we could ever have hoped for. It’s a dream come true.”
The grand opening celebration for the Troy Nutrition Center will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 498 East Walnut Street and the public is invited.
“We wanted our seniors to be the first to see the Troy Nutrition Center because they are the reason for it,” Green said. “So, we gave them a sneak peek along with a party on Iron Bowl day. We called it the Senior Iron Bowl and each senior could invite a friend. More than 80 seniors came and they all had a ball and can hardly wait to move in to our new Center.”
The new facility includes a common area, game room, exercise room, kitchen, office space, restrooms and a patio.
“All of this additional space will make it possible for us to accommodate more people and offer more programs, including afternoon programs and computer classes,” Green said. “We’ll have more room for our senior choirs that sing twice a week.
“At this time, we are serving 40 site meals a day and, with the larger facility, we should be able to increase that number. And, we can add people to the Center’s roll. The new facility is going to be a wonderful place for our seniors and we are so proud of it and so thankful for it.”
Green expressed appreciation to retired Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford for his efforts in making a new senior nutrition center a reality.
“Mayor Lunsford was good to the seniors in Pike County,” she said. “We never asked him for anything that we didn’t get.”
Green said that, when the plans were being made for the new nutrition center, Lunsford told her to “get what you want.”
“So, we got this baby grand piano,” she said, laughing. “Our senior choirs sing on Wednesdays and Fridays and they are going to love this piano.”
Green said Troy Mayor Jason Reeves and the Troy City Council will host the grand opening celebration Wednesday.
“This will be an opportunity for us to show our appreciation to the mayor and council,” Green said. “When they see the pride our seniors have in their new facility, they will know just how much this means to them.”
Everyone is invited to the grand opening of the Troy Nutrition Center at 10 a.m. Wednesday and to tour the new facility for the seniors.
