Football thoughts, basketball today at 2pm

The Troy football team lost another tough one, this time to Middle Tennessee State, to finish the season 5-7. It was the Trojans first loss to their rivals in the Battle for the Palladium in six meetings. I thought the defense played well. The offense, on the other hand, struggled to hold on to the football, handing MTSU five turnovers. The team looked better than it did last season, but just couldn’t come up with the handful of plays it needed to turn close losses into victories. We’ll see how recruiting goes. I think it’s obvious where improvement is most needed. The Trojans will also need to find a deep threat to replace Chip Reeves. Time to push the reset button and look forward to 2013.

Here is some Twitter reaction from Troy players after the loss:

Terrence Jones – “@BigTJones: Still can’t believe we lost”

Jarred Fleming – “@flemdelaflem66: Played my last game for the Trojans. I love this town, this school, and this team. It’s been an honor playing with my brothers out there”

Eric Thomas – “@T_Thomas3: Dat loss we jus took was on me…I take full responsibility fa dat one…I let da seniors n da rest of my teammates dwn”

The basketball team takes on Alabama State today at 2pm at Trojan Arena. Troy is 3-2 after bouncing back to win the final two games of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Chattanooga last week. The Trojans fell to Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech, while defeating Chattanooga and Southeast Missouri.

Hunter Williams lead the Trojans with 11 point per game. Antoine Myers, Emil Jones and Deonata Jethroe are averaging eight or more per contest.

It looks like this team is going to be what head coach Don Maestri said it would be, a hustle team. Not a lot of size, definitely not “showtime”, but they get after it.

The Trojans will return to the court on Tuesday when they host UAB at 7 p.m.
