NEW ORLEANS – Troy University quarterback Deon Anthony has been named the Manning Award Player of the Week, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Thursday.
Anthony accumulated 360 yards of total offense in Troy’s dramatic 38-37 victory over FIU last Saturday. The New Iberia, La., native completed 29-of-41 pass attempts for 245 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 115 yards and two scores. Anthony’s rushing total was the most by a Troy quarterback since 1989.
The Troy junior beat out USC’s Matt Barkley, Kansas State’s Collin Klein, Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Georgia’s Aaron Murray, Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez, Texas Tech’s Seth Doege and ULM’s Kolton Browning for the award.
“This is an amazing honor especially considering all of the great quarterbacks who were nominated,” Anthony said. “We have some of the best fans in the country and I want to thank them for voting for me this week. This is an award that I will share with the entire team, because it took all of us to pull together last weekend to come out with the win.”
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.
The Trojans head to Boca Raton, Fla., on Saturday in search of their fifth victory of the season when they take on Florida Atlantic. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CDT) from FAU Stadium.
