Free classical guitar concert in Troy

Troy University John M. Long School of Music will present a free concert by guitarist Mitch Weverka on Sept. 26 in the Sorrell Chapel on the Troy Campus.

The concert, which will begin at 7 p.m., is open to the public.

Weverka, who was born in California but raised in Fort Worth, Texas, began playing the guitar at age 7, receiving most of his instruction from Bolivian guitarist/artist, Oscar Valdez. He holds performance degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Southern Methodist University. He also lived and studied in Italy, where he received a diploma from the Academia Chitaristica al Teatro Cingio in Parma, as well as a Diploma of Merit from Academia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

Weverka is the founder and artistic/executive director of the Fort Worth Guitar Guild and currently coordinates the Guitar Guild Music Festival. He maintains a private studio at Orchestra Hall in Fort Worth and is the guitar instructor at Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts.
