Broadway is coming to Troy via the Marcy and Zina Show.
The dynamic duo of Marcy and Zina will be in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Claudia Crosby Theater on the campus of Troy University.
“Broadway’s Marcy and Zina Show” will be the opening event of the Troy Arts Council’s 2012-13 season and is an event of Troy University’s College of Fine Arts.
Dr. William Denison, TAC president, the Marcy and Zina Show will be a top of the line performance.
Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich have been writing together for 18 years. Heisler writes the lyrics and Goldrich writes the music. Many of the duo’s songs have been covered by a host of Broadway and cabaret talent.
Denison said hearing the original songs of Marcy and Zina interpreted by great voices of the musical theater is special but it will be an even greater thrill to have the opportunity to hear the composers perform their own work and learn the stories behind the songs.
“The audience will get to experience Marcy and Zina up close and personal, as many of their songs are drawn from their own experiences,” Denison said.
“The Marcy and Zina Show is the perfect catalyst for the Troy Arts Council’s new season because the duo is one of the most original voices in American musical theater today.”
Marcy and Zina are known as the duo that writes quirky and original songs about love, the art of falling in and out of love and the zany things that can happen on the dating scene.
“Some of their songs also evoke powerful emotional images and they resonate well with their audience, no matter the age,” Denison said.
Not on the marquee but on stage with the duo will be Scott Coulter, who has worked with Heisler for 14 years.
“Coulter is a keyboard artist and also has a strong tenor voice,” Denison said. “He will perform with Marcy and Zina and that will be an added attraction to the show.”
Marcy and Zina will also conduct a musical theater workshop for university and high school students, who are interested in musical theater, from 2 until 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hawkins/Adams/Long Hall. To enroll in the workshop, call John Jinright at 670-3593.
“Marcy and Zina have performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center and we are very fortunate to have a show of this caliber in Troy,” Denison said.
Tickets for “Broadway’s Marcy and Zina Show” Saturday night at the Claudia Crosby Theater are $20 for adults and $5 for students with an ID. Tickets will be available at the door. Show time is 7 p.m.
