Troy and Louisiana waited and waited and waited. Finally at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, they began the game that was scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday.
Troy downed Louisiana, 5-3, in the first of a twin bill on Tuesday in the Dixie Angels X-Play World Series. The win put Troy in the driver’s seat heading into the championship round.
That would not be the case, however, as the host team fell to Mississippi in the night cap, 6-1.
The loss means there is a three-way tie between Troy, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Troy already received a bye in the first round which means they will play Tennessee at 10 a.m. today.
In the in over Louisiana, Troy scored five runs in the first inning and held on to earn the victory.
Hannah Calhoun led off with a double. Kate Warrick reached base next after a fielding error.
After a ground out, Lydia Harrison doubled to drive in the two runners. Emma Kirkpatrick walked setting up Whittaca Starks’ RBI single. Magan Tillery followed with a single of her own to give Troy a 4-0 advantage. Graci Williams bounded a ball to second to score Starks and increase Troy’s lead.
“You never know what you’re going to get,” head coach Shane Calhoun said after the win. “They’ve worked hard and they earned it.”
Louisiana would counter with a pair of runs in the first and one in the third but Troy’s defense stiffened to hold off any attempted rally.
Brooke Bennett had Troy only other hit against Louisiana.
If Troy wins its morning match, they will play Tennessee for the World Series title immediately following.
Troy has not played Tennessee in the tournament. Troy had defeated Texas, Virginia and Louisiana before falling to Mississippi.
