Troy Angels hold off Virginia

Troy scored seven runs in the third inning and held off a late a late rally to walk away victorious, 10-8, in the Dixie Angels X-Play World Series at the Troy Sportsplex on Sunday.

Troy entered the nighcap of its Sunday doubleheader on a high after knocking off Texas that morning, 6-2.

Troy and Virginia traded three-run punches in teh first inning but the host team exploded for seven in the third.

Ansley Adams led off the big inning with a walk while Sarah and Hannah Calhoun reached on consecutive errors. Kate Warrick and Brooke Bennett each singled home runs to put Troy ahead 5-3. Lydia Harrsion grounded a pitch to shortstop but it was misplayed allowing another run to cross. The next batter, Emma Kirkpatrick, made the mistake hurt even worse with a two-RBI double. Troy led 8-3. Whittaka Starks and Meagan Tillery would also drive in runs to extedend Troy’s lead.

Virginia would chip away with a run in the bottom of the third and would clomb back in the game after scoring three in the fourth.

Troy would allow another run in the fifth to make it a two-run game but retired the side before Virginia could make it any closer.

Bennett and Tillery were the only Troy players with multiple hits. Both finished 2-for-2.

Hannah Calhoun and Starks also had hits.

Troy advances to play Louisiana at 8 p.m. on Monday in a battle of the only undefeated teams remaining in the tournament.
