Troy’s Darlings rout Opp to open Sub-District tourney

LUVERNE – Troy used a steady offensive output to knock off Opp in the opening round of the Dixie Darlings Sub-District tournament in Luverne on Friday.

Troy’s first four batters reached base and scored in the first innings. Libby Barnes, Alyssa Terry, Morgan Bundy, and Dannah Dawson all had hits and scored to give Troy a 4-0 lead. Raegan Brown also singled in the inning.

After Opp answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, McKenzie Cain, Bayli Eaton, Maggie English, and Terry all scored to up Troy’s advantage to 8-3.

In the third, Addi Garrett, Emily Williamson, and Cain all scored.

Troy led 11-4.

Opp would get four runs back in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 11-8.

Terry, Bundy, Brown, and Sadie Leverette all crossed home for Troy in the fourth.

Opp was shutout in the home half.

English led off the fifth with a single and later scored. Barnes and Bundy reached base before Dawson hit a inside-the-park homerun down the left field line, scoring all three runners, to invoke the mercy rule.

Railyn Williams also had a hit for Troy.

Troy will get a bye until Saturday’s afternoon round. Game time for Troy is set for 3:30 p.m.
