Spec building: ‘They will come’

“If you build it, they will come.”

That philosophy served Ray Kinsella well in “Field of Dreams.” And the Iowa corn farmer’s mantra is just as applicable to economic development efforts right here in the Wiregrass.

Leaders in the economic development effort in Pike County are spearheading the building of a speculative building at Troy’s Industrial Park South. The building, which will be about 50,000 square feet when completed, will give prospective industries a readily available option if they choose to relocate or open in Pike County.

Marsha Gaylard, president of the Pike County Economic Development Corp., explained this week that the building gives our community an edge in industrial recruiting. Industries are looking for communities with readily accessible facilities, and being prepared gives Pike County an edge in the recruiting process.

Already this year, City of Troy officials learned how critical a spec building could be when a prospective industry chose another community over Troy – primarily because no building was available.

That won’t be an issue anymore.

The investment of time and resources in this building is one that should pay off for our community, and it’s the type of effort that positions us well for success.

So yes, we’re building it.

And if that same pragmatism that served an Iowa farmer so well holds true, “they will come.”
