Chuck Dunn will join the Charles Henderson High School football staff after the Troy City Board of Education approved his hire on Thursday.

Dunn, who was an assistant on Charles Henderson’s staff from 1997-99, will now serve as the team’s defensive coordinator.

“The goal coming in was to have a 6A mentality to Charles Henderson,” head coach Mike Dean said. “I think we have brought in coaches with 6A mentalities and Chuck is another great addition.”

After graduating from Troy in 1997, Dunn served as an assistant under Hugh Fountain before taking a position as a graduate assistant on Larry Blakeney’s staff at Troy.

In 2002, Dunn became a defensive assistant at Prattville High School where, in his six seasons, helped lead the team to back-to-back AHSAA Class 6A state titles and a No. 2 national ranking in 2007.

Dunn was hired as an assistant at South Alabama in 2008 where he served before becoming the defensive coordinator at Oxford High School last season.

The Trojans will field an experienced new group of assistant coaches this season.

Offensive coordinator Gregg Baker was head coach at Faulkner University for three seasons and spent time as an assistant at Jeff Davis and Prattville. Baker spent two seasons as head coach at American Christian Academy before his move to Faulkner.

“I think it’s a great hire for the school,” Dean said.

“You’ve got to hire good people and let the do a job. That’s the next task. It’s going to take a team effort by the coaches in the first year to get our terminology down and make sure everyone is on the same page.”

Sylvester Atkins returns to the Trojans football program as the team’s secondary coach. Atkins had previously spent time as a defensive coordinator at Tallassee and Smiths Station.

Charles Henderson will play its annual Pike County Classic against Pike County High School on Aug. 24 in Brundidge before opening the regular on the road versus Bayside Academy in Daphne on Aug. 31.
