The 5A Section 2 Area Championship marked the end of a successful 2012 season for the Charles Henderson High School soccer team, a season that has brought about another honor in the form of junior player Mitchell Mobley.

Mobley was selected as a member of the South team for the AHSAA All-Star week, one of the highest honors that is given to an AHSAA player.

“I’m really excited,” Mobley said. “I’ve never played in it before and I don’t know many people who have so I’m a little nervous. There’s going to be a lot of good players but we played a lot of good teams this season especially in playoffs and that’s going to help me know what to expect.”

The players selected are nominated during the season by their respective coaches, with scouts coming to observe the players in a game situation and make their selections for the All-Star team.

The players who are selected, who are pulled from across Alabama, will play in a north/south game in Montgomery on June 11.

For Mobley, the game represents a chance to learn from some of the best players in the state and get closer to possibly playing collegiate soccer after graduation.

“One of the most exciting parts is having college coaches at the game,” he said. “I really want to play collegiate soccer so it’s a big opportunity to be able to play with such good players in front of some coaches.”

Mobley won’t have a chance to practice with the rest of the South team until the practice session the day before the game, but that doesn’t mean he’s not using his free time to prepare and practice.

“I’ve mostly been running trying to get my fitness up,” he said. “I want to be prepared for the game these are some of the best guys in the state. I expect a good team effort from everyone and I think it will be really beneficial being around them.”

Mobley will play in the All-Star game on June 11 at the YMCA in Montgomery, with a time to be determined.

Mobley would like to thank his coaches and teammates for everything they’ve done and for their support.

“I really want to thank coach Lieb for nominating me and Ms. Locascio in the office for being our team manager,” he said. “I also want to thank my teammates they’ve been really supportive and have helped me to be a better player.”
