Goshen softball falls to Central in seventh

Goshen fell to Central-Hanyeville, 4-1, in a defensive softball battle on Tuesday in the Class 2A Area 5 tournament.

Alli Warrick struck out 13 batters in the game but surrendered three runs in the top of the seventh to take the loss.

Goshen would have opportunities to score but stranded runners every inning except the last.

In each the first and second innings, the Eagles left runners on first and second then left the bases full in the third.

Goshen would finally break a scoreless tie in the fourth.

With tow outs, Haley Hughes singled up the middle a promptly stole second. After Hughes advanced to third on a wild pitch, Sam Roy laced a pitch down the right firsl line that found chalk to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Central worked its own two-out magic in the fifth with consecutive single. Goshen would commit a throwing error attempting to get the ball in from the outfield that would allow the Lions to score from second and knot the game 1-1.

Again with two outs, Goshen threatened in the sixth. Carmen Kelly singled to right and stole second. Hughes and Roy walked to load the bases but a fly out ended the inning.

An Eagle fielding error would give Central a lead-off base runner in the seventh. Central would score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Warrick would sandwich two walk between a pair of strike outs but a two-out single scored two more runs and would cap the scoring, 4-1, in favor of the Lions.

At time of press, Goshen was playing Highland Home in a elimination game. The winner will play Central on Thursday at 4p.m.
