As police work to solve two off-campus rapes and an on-campus armed robbery, students at Troy University and residents throughout Pike County are upping their safety measures – as well they should.

Gun safety classes offered by local law enforcement agencies; town hall meetings to distill fact from rumor; and efforts to increase awareness about the dangers of sexual violence and how to protect yourself are among some of the proactive measures being taken right now.

More to the point, sales of guns, pepper spray and even Tasers are on the rise in Pike County, indicating an increased interest personal protection.

Dean Herbert Reeves at Troy University drove home the need for personal awareness and safety earlier this week, saying: “We continue to stress to students, faculty and staff that while the safety and security of the campus and other areas in Troy will be enhanced, everyone needs to take this on as a personal responsibility.”

It’s sound advice. Everyone – student or year-round resident – needs to be aware of her surroundings at all times. Safety measures, such as never walking alone at night; staying in well-lighted areas; keeping doors and windows locked; not opening doors for strangers are good practices to have at any time.

We cannot always control our situation or circumstances, but we can take precautions as do all we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Be safe. Be smart.
