Police look for fake detective

A man clad in a grey business suit pretending to be a police detective from Montgomery is wanted for a theft in Troy Friday afternoon.

According to the Troy Police Department, the man went to a home on Booker Street and knocked on the front door of an 85-year-old victim. He flashed a police-type badge and told the woman he needed to come inside and talk to her about an important matter.

Once inside, the robber said he was investigating forged checks and counterfeit money in the Troy area and needed to check her money to see if it was fake.

The victim allowed the man to inspect her money and he took an undisclosed amount from her purse without her knowing.

The man reportedly left the victim’s home in a black van that had been parked in front of the house and headed toward Academy Street.

Police advise the suspect is a black male between 5 feet, 7 inches tall to 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs between 180 and 200 lbs. He was wearing glasses and had close cut hair and scruffy grey and black facial hair.
