Clayton man charged with in vehicle theft

Troy Police arrested a 33-year-old Clayton man on Tuesday  in connection with the unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle in August.

Melvin Jones was being held on a $2,500 bond in the Pike County Jail.

He was charged with the breaking and entering of the vehicle that occurred between 12:30 pm and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29  in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Troy.

Sgt. Benny Scarbrough said TPD observed video surveillance from video cameras at Wal-Mart that provided police with a description of the suspect and his vehicle.

The property stolen was identified as two Fujitsu Scanners valued at a total of $1,800.00.  One of the scanners has been recovered from the suspect’s residence.

The suspect’s vehicle, a green Ford F150 pickup was observed in the parking lot of Wal-Mart Tuesday afternoon by TPD officers, Scarbrough said.

A subsequent investigation led to the identity of Jones in connection with this case.

A warrant for his arrest was obtained Tuesday afternoon and he was arrested at approximately 4:55 pm.
