The Lillian D. Green Nutrition Center’s S.O.S. 5K Run is held annually and its purpose is to raise awareness more than money.

“We like to raise enough money to pay for the shirts and trophies and have a little left over to do something for our seniors but the run is really more about raising awareness of our nutrition center and its programs,” said Jessica Cox, Center secretary and project chair. “Many times when we have new participants join us they tell us they had just recently learned about the Lillian D. Green Nutrition Center. The run is held mainly to raise awareness and, hopefully, more seniors will join us.”

Cox said the S.O.S. (Supporting Our Seniors) 5K Run was initiated five years ago by a Troy University student who organized the run as a class project.

“The run was a great success and a lot of fun so we decided to continue it,” Cox said. “The run has raised a little extra money for the Center. One year, we were able to buy finger foods for an event. Another year, we bought Bingo prizes and another year we took our seniors to a play. Just odds and ends things. Nothing big but something extra and fun.”

The Lillian D. Green’s 4th Annual S.O.S. (Supporting Our Seniors) 5K Run was held Dec. 3 and Cox said the run raised a little money for the Center and, hopefully, a lot of awareness of the Troy nutrition center.

“We had a good turnout for the race in both the male and female divisions,” Cox said. “And, I think most of the runners had good personal times. Our overall winners were Stockton Raso in the male division with a time of 19:57 and Casey McDermott in the female division with a time of 17:53.

Jason Jones placed second in the male overall division with a time of 22:54 and Aaron Olsen was third with a time of 24:51.

In the female overall division, Paige Watson was second with a time of 25:08 and

Lakin Turner was third with a time of 27:32.

In the age divisions, Will Price won the 17 & under division with a time of 33:44. Chad Rhodes took the 18-30 division with a time of 27:13; Greg Price, won the 31-39 age division with a time of 33:44; and Michael Woods was the winner in the 40 and over division with 25:31.

The winners in the female age division were Jessica Christian in the 18-28 age division with a time of 38:07; Kristy Jones in the 29-39 age division with a time of 27:53; Angelina Westberg in the 40-50 age division with a time of 27:41 and Cynthia Brunson in the 51and over age division with a time of 43:27.

“We would like to thank all of those who participated in the Lillian D. Green Nutrition Center S.O.S. 5K Run and helped us raise awareness of the nutrition center in Troy,” Cox said. “We encourage the seniors in our area who are not participating in a nutrition program to visit the Lillian D. Green Nutrition Center and see all of the interesting and fun things that we have to offer.”

The Lillian D. Green Nutrition Center is located on the lower level of the Colley Senior Complex facility on Elm Street in Troy. Ground will be broken on the new senior nutrition center in January.
