Jordan Owens probably isn’t exactly sure what it means to be an artist but she knows for sure that she really enjoys drawing.

So, when the children at Heaven Sent Day Care were asked if they would like to draw a picture about the heart and how important a healthy heart is, Jordan didn’t waste time getting her crayons out of the box.

Jordan was named the winner of the 2012 Heart Walk t-shirt contest sponsored by the Pike County Chapter of the American Heart Association. Her design is being used to promote the 2012 Pike County Heart Walk in February.

“Jordan really loves to draw and she is a very good young artist,” said Claudette Rogers, Heaven Sent director. “Every few days, she brings in something that she has drawn. But she drew her Heart Walk design here at day care.”

Rogers said to prepare the children to participate in the tee-shirt design contest, she and the staff explained, in simple terms, how the heart works and that sometimes the heart gets sick. with sick hearts all around the world feel better. She asked me what the world looks like.”

“We told the children that the Heart Walk we have each February raises money to help people with sick hearts feel better,” Rogers said. “Jordan said she wanted to help people

Rogers told the five-year-old that most of the world is water and showed her on the globe how blue represents water and brown and green represent the earth.

Jordan drew a heart that represents the world with stick figures hold hands around the world.

“Jordan said that they are holding hands to help sick hearts,” Rogers said. “All of the children did really good with their drawings. We are proud of all of them.”

Janet Motes, a member of the Pike County Heart board, said the heart association’s tee shirt design contest was open to all pre-school children in the county.

“We had about 50 entries from Heaven Sent, Mothers’ Day Out, the Early Childhood Center at Troy Elementary School and the pre-school program at Park Memorial United Methodist Church.

“The entries were judged by an impartial panel and all of the children did a great job,” Motes said. “We congratulate Jordon on being the winner and we presented her with the first t-shirt printed.”

The t-shirts will be sold with the funds going to support the Pike County Heart Association fundraising efforts for 2012.

“We are registering teams for this year’s Heart Walk that will be held on Feb. 15 at Cattleman Park,” Motes said. “We encourage everyone to get involved. Teams can be as few as two or as many as you want. But you don’t have to be on a team to participate in the Heart Walk or to make a donation.”

Isabelle Boyd is in charge of team development and may be reached at 334-566-6022 extension 233 to register a team or for more information.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of American and stroke is number three,” Motes said. “Those facts are all we need to understand how important it is to find treatments and cures for these diseases of the heart.”
