Troy quarterback Corey Robinson passed the 5,000 career passing yard mark in Saturday’s 24-23 victory over in-state rival UAB.
The Trojan signal caller threw for 349 yards in the contest and currenly sits fifth on Troy’s all-time passing list behind only Sim Byrd, Brock Nutter, Levi Brown, and Omar Haugabook.
Oddly, Robinson did not throw a touchdown pass in a game for the first time in his collegiate career leading him to be a little critial of his performance.
“Me, personally, I’ve got to get a lot better,” he said.
Robinson practiced only one day in the week leading into the game (Thursday) due to a bruised shoulder he suffered against Middle Tennessee.
“The injury bothered him all week,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “We had to shut him down throwing for a couple of days.”
Southward also moving up record list
Troy running back Shawn Southward passed Johnny Grimes to 19th on the Trojans all-time rushing list.
Southward needed 15 yards to surpass Grimes coming in to the game and did so on a 9-yard carry on the first play of the third quarter. He finished with 42 yards on 12 carries.
Troy 4-0 in coin toss play
While the Trojans are 2-2 on the field, Troy is a perfect 4-0 this season in the coin toss catagory.
The Trojans elected to defer their option to the second hald against UAB.
UAB’s starting QB sit out Troy game
UAB’s regular starter Bryan Ellis sat out Saturday’s game due to a concussion suffered against East Carolina last week.
Sophomore Jonathan Perry started in his place and finished 19-for-39 with 196 yards. It was Perry’s first career start.
Receiver Jackie Williams, who caught the hail mary last season to beat Troy, caught a career high eight passes for 89 yards. Williams also return a punt 91-yards in the first quarter.
Ballou in the right place, twice
UAB senior cornerback T.J. Ballou intercepted a Corey Robinson pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown and also recovered a fumble, both in the third quarter.
