JACK – The second week of what Zion Chapel defensive coordinator Bradley Bowers called “murders row” ended in yet another close win for the Rebels, 19-14 over New Brockton.

Clint Wise stuffed Gamecock running back Kendall Truitt on a fourth and 2 play with less that a minute remaining to seal the win.

“We were in what we call ‘Man D” said Wise. “I recognized the play and shot the gap and made a tackle.”

Bowers could almost not hold back emotions after the hard fought win.

“I’m so proud of my guys,” said the defensive coordinator. “We pitched a shutout in the second half and got us a huge win. It means a lot to me personally.”

The Rebel offense sputtered throughout the first half, as they fumbled the rock three times.

Early in the second quarter though, LaMarcus Adair found Andrew Logan running free down the seam for a 44-yard touchdown bomb.

The Gamecocks quickly responded to the Rebel score with a short scoring drive of their own. The New Brockton drive was set up by a 60-yard kick return to the Rebel 21.

New Brockton carried a 14-7 lead to half time and kept it to the final minutes of the contest.

Adair and company set up shop at their own 18-yard line with just over five minutes remaining.

Head coach Mike Waters used both quarterbacks, Adair and Mickey Cox, to near perfection on the drive.

The Rebels covered 82 yards on just seven plays en route to the deciding score.

Adair and Cox combined to go 3-4 on the drive for 60 yards and the touchdown strike to running back Brennan Schindler.

Schindler hauled in the pass in the left flat, dodged two would be tacklers and went the distance down the sideline.

“Anytime you play Brockton, you know that you are going up against a well coached, well disciplined, and talented ball club” said Waters. “We made just one more play than they did, and here we are at 5-1.”

The top spot in 2A region 2 will be up for grabs next Friday night when the Rebels hit the road for the short trip to Elba.

Elba comes in to the affair at 6-0 and ranked number one in the state.

“We are 5-1 and dang proud to be” said Waters. “I haven’t watched any film on them (Elba) but I know they will have a lot of speed at the skill guys. We just have to have a good week of prep and take care of ourselves.”

When asked about playing the number one ranked Tiger on their home turf, Waters kept his answer shot and to the point.

“We don’t play games on paper, we get a shot and that’s all we want”
