Charles Henderson claims top spot in The Messenger’s latest Power Rankings.

These rankings do not reflect whether one team is better than another in a head-to-head matchup. They only show our opinion of how well each team is playing in comparison to others in the area. So here they are:

1. CHHS (2-1, 2-0)

The Trojans face a tough test in the Valley Rams this week but a win would set CHHS up for region title contention.

CHHS lost to Valley 40-0 last season but both have vastly different squads in 2011.

The Trojans can run the ball and control the clock. They must improve, however, on their redzone offence and not turning the ball over.

2. PLAS (1-2, 1-2)

The Patriots actually climb a spot after their 32-14 loss to No. 1 Monroe. The final score does not indicate Pike’s play through three and a half quarters.

The Patriots hit a stretch of non-region opponents before a do-or-die game with Ft. Dale on Oct. 7.

3. Zion Chapel (2-1, 1-1)

The Rebels lost a tought one to Samson last week, 17-13 but remain very much in the hunt for a playoff spot in Class 2A Region 2.

Zion Chapel will tussle with the Flying Squadron of Highland Home in game that could set each team apart in the region standings.

4. Goshen (1-2, 1-1)

Goshen picked up their first win of the season last week.

The Eagles take on New Brockton this week and a win will get them back to .500 and in the mix for the playoffs.

5. Pike County (0-3, 0-2)

The Bulldogs need to pick up a win this week against a tough Abbeville team. At 0-2, Pike County will need a quick turnaround to stay alive for the postseason.
