The Troy Pike Cultural Arts Center has partnered with Troy University’s Department of Theater and Dance to present Smokey Joe’s Café at The Studio on Sept. 15.
Richard Metzger, Center executive director, said “Smokey Joe’s Café” will be the Thursday Night at the Studio event for September.
“The exception is that Thursday Night at the Studio is traditionally the first Thursday night of the month,” Metzger said. “But we’re breaking with tradition in order to bring this incredible show to The Studio.”
The Tony Award nominated show presents the songs of Leiber and Stoller in various combinations with no dialogue.
“This musical celebrates revue style dance and rock ’n roll,” Metzger said. “In 1996, Smokey Joe’s cafe was nominated for the Grammy Best Musical Show Album. Tony Award nominations include Best Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
“The ‘Smokey Joe’s Café’ show will be much like other First Thursday Nights at The Studio, which are indoor tailgate parties with entertainment,” Metzger said. “So everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic basket and a cooler and enjoy this special event at The Studio.”
However, Metzger said a picnic is not required. “People can just come and enjoy the show.”
Tickets will be $12.50 per person, $25 a couple and $100 for a table of eight.
“There is a lot of interest in ‘Smokey’s Joe’s Café’ so we only have seven tables still available for this event,” Metzger said. “But you don’t have to reserve a table to join the fun. We’ll have seating for all who want to come. But, to be sure you are able to sit at a table with your friends and family, please reserve a full table.
To reserve a table, call 670-2287.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. in The Studio.
Those who are unable to attend the Thursday Night performance of “Smokey Joe’s Café” at The Studio on Sept. 14 may catch other performances at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16, 17 and 18 and matinee performances at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 18.
Tickets for the matinee on Sept. 17 are two for one.
Tickets for the additional performances may be purchased at the Troy University Box Office: 334-670-3293. Food and drinks will be available for purchase during these performances.
