15-year-old Gerneshia Barnes, who collapsed during a Jan. 4 basketball game, has died.

The Goshen High School student was a ninth grader on the basketball team when she went into cardiac arrest during a break in a game against Highland Home.

Goshen students held a prayer vigil Thursday morning to honor and remember Barnes.

“She was obviously well liked,” Goshen principal Dr. Warren Weeks said. “She was a good athlete and a good student.”

Weeks said Barnes was at home when she passed between 2:30 and 4 a.m. Thursday.

According to Weeks, Barnes had been cleared by doctors and had a signed physical form on file prior the start of the season.

Barnes had transferred to Goshen from Luverne Middle School prior to the 2010-2011 school year
