The Troy Dixie Angels took only three innings to defeat Headland 14-1 on Tuesday and capture the sub-district championship.
The 9- and 10-year-olds were 5-0 in the tournament, led by strong bats.
“We’re hitting well,” said Coach Larry Sanders. “If they keep hitting like this, they can play with anybody.”
The team was led at the plate Tuesday by Kelsey Gibson, who had an inside-the-park homerun.
Bailey Rushing, Holly Hughes, Molly Kate Sanders, Hannah Calhoun, Sidney Armstrong, Gracie Scarbrough, Nelsey Leverette, Sabra Daniels and Brooke Bennett all got hits in the game, with Calhoun going 2 for 2 with two bunts and Daniels getitng a double.
“Tucker Earles had a triple in the game last night,” Sanders said. “Sydni Garrett didn’t hit tonight, either, but she’s been hitting well.”
The Angels started the tournament by beating Headland 10-2 on Saturday. They downed Eufaula 13-11, Dothan 10-7 and another Dothan team 10-5 before facing Headland again in the championship.
“They’ve been playing well in the field,” Sanders said. “They’re playing good defense.”
His only regret is that he wasn’t able to give more players time on the pitchers mound. Bailey Rushing pitched on Tuesday night and Sanders pitched Monday.
“I wish we could have worked a few more of them at pitching,” Sanders said.
Th team travels to Geneva on Friday for the for the district tournament.
