Albert Robert Whittle

Albert Robert Whittle, 96, died on March 31, 2011, at his home in Moorpark, CA, of natural causes.  His wife of 70 years, Nell (nee Clark) Whittle, and his son Howard (“Chip”) and daughter-in-law, Shari, cared for him in his last years and were with him at his death.  He was retired from distinguished careers in the United States Air Force (USAF) as a Lieutenant Colonel, and as the Vice President of Financial Affairs at Troy University in Troy, AL.  Albert was born in Augusta, GA, on November 12, 1914, to Benjamin Clint Whittle and Essie Howard Whittle and was one of 11 brothers and sisters.  He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Georgia in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts (AB) and a Master of Science in Education (MS Ed); and the Atlanta Law School with a Bachelor of Law (LLB).  Upon his graduation, he taught for several years, first at Atlanta College in Atlanta and then at the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), in Montgomery, AL.  At the onset of World War II, Albert entered the Army Air Corps as a member of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) and continued in a legal capacity in the USAF during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.  During his USAF career, he was admitted to the bar in Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio and certified to meet the bar before the United States Court of Military Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States.  He served as an instructor in the first USAF JAG School.  Additionally, he served in the JAG at Maxwell AFB; the USAF in Europe, Wiesbaden, Germany; Robins AFB, GA; Wright-Patterson AFB, OH; the USAF in the Far East Asia Region, Tachikawa, Japan; and again at Wright-Patterson AFB, where he retired from the Air Force in 1969 to begin his career at Troy University.  He received numerous military awards and medals and was a member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the Air Force Retired JAG Association, the International Legal Society, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.  He was preceded in death by this mother and father; his oldest son, Robert; and his brothers and sisters:  Essie Ione, James, Clint, Howard, Bea, Nina, Gary, Dorothy, and Lucille.  He is survived by his wife, Nell; sons, Alan (Linda) and Chip (Shari); granddaughters, Zezette Cargile (John) and Taylor Whittle; grandson, Jason (Katerina); great-grandchildren, Phineas, Janet, and Henry Whittle, and Cullen and Gwen Cargile; sister, Lillian; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Albert had an amazing life filled with travel, adventure, love, and service to others.  He will be missed here on Earth but his family is comforted by knowing that there is another angel in Heaven.

A memorial service will be held at Rose Family Chapel on Friday April 15, 2011 at 1 pm

Funeral arrangements will be made by Rose Family Funeral Home in Simi Valley, CA and a memorial service will be held there at a later date.  Burial will be at the family plot at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta, GA at a later date, to be announced, with full military honors.
