The Board of Adjustments on Thursday approved construction of a new 14-unit apartment complex on Center Street.

The complex, to be built by Brian Saunders, will be located at 100 and 105 Center Street and will be in addition to the existing 20-unit complex Saunders operates at that location.

“I had some extra land, so I’m going to put some one-bedroom apartments on it,” Saunders said.

When board members questioned the availability of parking spaces, Saunders offered to address the concerns.

“They like for you to have at least one parking spot per bedroom. Well, I have additional parking at my existing apartments, and so we’re going to use the additional parking spots at the existing apartments plus the new parking spots in order to cover all the parking requirements.”

In other business, the board of adjustments:

• Approved a variance request by Willie Parker to place a single family home on a sub-standard lot located at 110 E. Hodges St.

• Approved a request to continue the use of an existing commercial parking lot located at 1117 U.S. Highway 231 South, made by Mr. Peyton Ryle (representing Key Mahone, United, Inc.).

• Approved a request for a variance to place a mobile home at 307 Washington Street, made by Lakeya McAlpine. She requested the variance to allow for care of a family member suffering from an illness.

• Approved a request for a variance to place a mobile home at 424 North Knox Street, made by Sonja Moss who also cited the need to care for a family member.
