Mildred Nixon Mallette

Mildred Nixon Mallette died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 after a long and full life. She was born April 17, 1918 in Goshen, Pike County, Alabama to Grace Howard Nixon and Lochran Conner Nixon. She graduated from Goshen High School, attended Troy Normal (now Troy University), transferring in 1937 to Alabama College for Women (University of Montevallo), where she graduated in 1940. She married Shelton Rowell Mallette of Dozier, Alabama, a naval veteran, in 1944.

During most of her married life she resided in Greenville, Alabama, later retiring to her childhood home in Goshen. Most recently she lived near her children in Birmingham. A career home economics teacher, Mildred taught in Cullman, Dozier, and, for most of her career, in Greenville, Alabama. She was an accomplished cook who enjoyed hosting family and friends in her home. She particularly enjoyed quilting, a hobby she took up later in life. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Colonies as well as Daughters of the American Revolution. As a devoted Christian woman, she was a lifetime member of the Goshen Baptist Church, returning there in retirement. Mildred was most proud of her family, often telling others that – of her accomplishments – her greatest was raising her four daughters. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother full of kindness and love for her family and friends, always placing others first.
