Rebecca Rushing Shipman, born December 13, 1940 passed away January 10, 2011. She is survived by her husband, James A. Shipman, Daughter’s-in-Law, Linna Shipman and Kim Shipman Kersey, Grandchildren, Alex Shipman, Billy Shipman, Jessica Shipman, Nathan Shipman, Honor Shipman and Stephanie Kersey.
She is preceded in death by her infant brother, James Terry Rushing and her sons, James Terry and Alan Keith Shipman.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Pea River Presbyterian Church in Clio with the Reverend James Pitts officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.
Pallbearers will be Grover Kelly, Tommy Shipman, Kenneth Shipman, Steve Shipman, Earl Smith and Brian Smith.
Rebecca was born in Troy, Alabama, the oldest child of Ezra and Wilma Rushing. She graduated from Troy State Teacher’s College and taught elementary school for over 25 years. She also obtained two Master’s degrees from Troy State, one in Elementary Education and one in Counseling. She met and married James A. Shipman December 31, 1960 and had two sons, James Terry, born February 9, 1962 and Alan Keith, born January 21, 1964.
“Miz” Shipman, as her students called her, touched many students’ lives in her years as a teacher. She will be remembered for all the students she taught and inspired and for how many students would come up to her years after she taught them and give her a big hug. She followed the Lord in all ways and has joined him and her sons in Heaven for all eternity.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
