Nursing home seeks ‘sweethearts’

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for sweethearts. It’s for anyone who cares about others and wants to let them know in a special way.

That is an opportunity that Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center is offering to the Pike County community on this Valentine’s Day.

Jeanette Dawkins, TH&R activities director, said the community was so generous in making Christmas special for the residents and she offered again a heartfelt appreciation on behalf of all the residents.

“There’s no way to say how much the residents enjoyed a visit from Santa Claus and the gifts they received,” she said.

“We want to make Valentine’s Day just as special.”

The TH&R Center’s advisory board met Wednesday and planned an old-fashioned Valentine’s Day party for the residents on Friday, Feb. 11.

“We want to put paper bags on the doors of all the residents and fill them with Valentines,” Dawkins said.

“That way each of them will have their own Valentines to open and enjoy.”

There are 175 residents at the health care facility and Dawkins said hopes are for each resident to have several Valentines in their sack.

“We are inviting the community to bring Valentines for the residents and maybe even write a short message on the back,” Dawkins said.

“Before the party, we will put the Valentines in the sacks and the residents can open them whenever they want. If they have visitors over the weekend, they can enjoy them together.”

Those who would like to bring Valentines for the residents are asked to bring them to the TH&R office by Feb. 10.

“We want to make sure that we have an equal number of Valentines for the residents,” Dawkins said.

The Valentine party will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 11 and family members are invited to share this special time with their loved one.
