A 4-year-old boy remained hospitalized Wednesday after being struck by a truck when he wandered into the Henderson Highway on Tuesday.
The child, whose name was not released, was listed in fair condition at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
Capt. Randall Barr of the Troy Police Department said no charges had been filed in the incident, as it remains under investigation.
“It appears the child wandered out into the roadway and was struck by the vehicle,” Barr said.
The accident occurred around 7 p.m.
“It was dark and rainy,” Barr said. “It was just a bad situation.”
Barr said the vehicle, a mid-sized Chevrolet pickup truck, was traveling north towards Troy. Excessive speed did not appear to be a factor in the incident, he added.
“The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene,” Barr said. “We have not filed any charges at this point, but the case does remain under investigation.”
Because no charges have been filed, police declined to release the name of the driver.
Just how the child wandered into the street continues to be investigated, as well. The child was near the residence where he was believed to have been staying, but “not directly in front of it,” Barr said.
“Often when something like this happens, there’s usually more than one thing that goes on,” Barr said.
