As the fall approaches, a new season has begun in the wide world of recreation sports.

Monday night was the kick off for the 2010 soccer season, and according to Troy Parks and Recreation Director Dan Smith, the Troy community was out ready and eager to get the new season underway.

“It was great,” Smith said about the league’s opening ceremonies.

“I am so very happy to see another soccer season begin. As much as people enjoy the baseball and softball seasons, soccer is such a unique sport and one that the Troy community really embraces.

“(The soccer season) is always a great gathering of families and the community,” he added.

In all, there are over 20 soccer teams competing between the ages of 5 and 13, with close to 250 kids dispersed throughout the teams.

With the exception of a few, every team was in action on Monday, and will be until Oct. 23, when the season comes to an end.

“Everything went really well (Monday night),” Youth Sports Coordinator David Dickey said.

“I think a lot of people were pretty happy to see (the soccer season) start up again.”

While the first games were Monday, the teams had been practicing for a while before hand in preparation for the season.

“Our staff did a great job getting everything together and ready,” Smith said. “By all accounts, we got the season off to a great start.”
