Let’s Eat: Good idea, good cause

Good food and a good cause. What more can you ask for? The members of the Education Committee of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce are putting together a creative fund-raiser for the annual PRAISE scholarship fund.

Titled “Let’s Eat,” the fund-raising program is recruiting area restaurants to partner with the Chamber to raise funds for the scholarships. As partners, the restaurants will take turns donating 10 percents of their profits from one day each month to the scholarship fund. For its part, the Chamber is promoting the program, with advertising in local media, and of course, sending plenty of business into the restaurants.

We like to think of this as a win-win.

The PRAISE scholarship is a $1,000 award given each year to the senior with the highest ACT in PIke County. By expanding the fund-raising efforts, education committee memers hope to be able to expand the reach of the scholarship to recognize runners-up, as well, many of whom often score as high as 31 or 32 on the ACT.

More important, it’s rewarding to see a positive response from the business community here in Pike County. Serveral restaurants, including The Pines, Hooks, Crowe’s Chicken, Byrd Drugs and the Pig Cafe, have already signed up for the program. More will be joining soon.

So say thanks to these business owners and when the opportunity arises to eat with them as part of “Let’s Eat,” please do so.

It’s a chance to enjoy a good meal for a good cause.
