A Pike County man confessed Thursday to the theft of a six-ton air conditioning unit from a business on Highway 125 in Brundidge. The unit was valued at between $8,000 and $10,000.

Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas said John D. Haws, 27, of 3714 Highway 125 was arrested on Wednesday. Haws told deputies that the unit was on a slab and he and three others put a chain around the unit and pulled it two miles up the highway to his residence where they disassembled it.

Russell said other arrests are forthcoming.

Several air conditioning units have been stolen from Pike County churches in recent weeks but no connection between the thefts has been established.

“We are looking at all possibilities,” Thomas said. “Anyone who has any information about any of these thefts is asked to call the Pike County Sheriff’s Department at 566-4347.”
