‘Jumping for joy usually means something wonderfully exciting has happened and there is cause to celebrate.

The “Jump for Joy Project” was designed to benefit Joy Burgans, a young mother of three who has been diagnosed with cancer. And, those who participate in the benefit Zumba class at the Troy Recreation Center tonight will literally be jumping for Joy.

The event was organized by Dr. Phylecya Cheatham in an effort to raise funds to assist with the medical expenses of a fellow member of the Troy medical community.

“Joy is a nurse at Troy Regional Medial Center and her husband also has a medical problem and is unable to work full time,” Cheatham said. “All benefits from the two Zumba benefit classes will go to the Burgans family.”

Zumba is the latest fitness craze and is based in Latin music and dance steps.

“The first Jump for Joy Project benefit class was on Saturday, and everyone had a lot of fun and the money that was raised will hopefully be a help to Joy and her family during these very trying times,” Cheatham said. “With the second and final benefit class tonight, we hope to have even more people participate. A night class is often easier for many to attend.”

The fee for the benefit class is $5, but donations above that amount are greatly appreciated.

“The fee and any donations above it will all go the Burgans family,” Cheatham said.

“The Jump for Joy Project is a good way to help Joy and her family and also to learn about a new, fun exercise program that will benefit your health and well being.

“The Jump for Joy benefit class begins at 6 p.m. tonight at the Troy Recreation Center, and everyone is invited to come out and do something good for someone else and for your health’s sake.”
