The Troy Pre-Minor team blew a big lead in Brundidge Saturday night against Eufaula, losing a heartbreaker 10-9 in extra innings.

Troy led 7-0 after three innings, but saw Eufaula score nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to force extra innings.

“With 8-year-olds, sometimes you’ll have the train rolling in a certain direction, and all of a sudden, the wheels will fall off,” said head coach Andy Blair. “The only thing you can really attribute that to is the fact they’re 8 and they’re still learning the game.”

The game was tied at 9 after six innings, sending it into a seventh inning that saw Eufaula take the lead in the top of the seventh.

Troy threatened in the bottom half of the inning by putting runners on first and second with two outs, but those runners could not advance any further.

“It’s a tough loss, but Eufaula is a good team, and we knew that coming in,” Blair said. “They played well, but we just didn’t make the key plays we needed to.”

Troy scored a run in the first when Cole McWhorter crossed the plate, and added another in the second when Karson Mays scored to make it 2-0, Troy.

The Trojans added five more in the third on runs from Payne Griffen, McWhorter, Jackson Blair, Ty Singleton and Logan Johnson.

After Eufaula scored four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4, Troy looked as if it had put the came away thanks to runs from Mays and gage Knighten in the bottom of the fourth.

However, Eufaula scored five in the fifth, setting the stage for extra innings.

Troy will now play Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in an elimination game that will see the winner advance to the finals of the district tournament

“We knew we were going to have to win five games to win the tournament no matter what, and we still feel like we can do that,” Blair said. “They’ll be fine, and I expect them to bounce back Tuesday night.”
