The Troy Darlings took an early lead and never looked back, defeating Enterprise 19-11 in its first Sub-District tournament game.

The team hit at least one slump during the game but still managed to stay atop their opponent.

“We had a bad defensive game in my opinion, but we were able to battle through, and I attribute that to the first game hitters,” said Coach Shane Calhoun.

Hannah Calhoun led the team with the most runs, hitting two singles, a double and one triple. Caitlyn Smith followed close behind with three singles.

But, Calhoun said each player on the team scored at least once, keeping the Darlings’ on top of its opponents for the game’s entirety.

“We never lost the lead, gained our composure back and finished them off,” the coach said.

The Darlings started strong, scoring nine runs in the first two innings, to its opponents’ three.

The two teams both scored three runs in the third inning, giving the Darlings a six-point advantage.

But, in the fourth inning Enterprise began to inch up to Troy, scoring five more runs over Troy’s two.

The team held on and was able to defeat its opponent in the end with an eight-point edge, 19-11.

“It was a tough night, but we stayed ahead the whole game,” Calhoun said.

As the team advances to the second tournament game against Crenshaw County in Brantley tonight at 7 p.m., Calhoun said he’s confident his team will maintain its winning start.

“As long as we hit the ball we should be OK. You expect to have the jitters the first game, and I think we did,” Calhoun said.

“I’m hoping we got it out of our system.

“I think we’ve got a good team, and I’m sure the other teams are good, too. So, we’re just going to take it one game at a time.”
