After finishing in second place at the Elba tournament this past weekend, the Goshen Eagles softball team was back in action on Tuesday, this time facing New Brockton on the road.
In the recent tournament, the Eagles defeated New Brockton 4-1, however this time around it would be the opposite result as GHS would fall 9-8 to the Gamecocks.
“We just came up a little short,” head coach Dee Hughes said Tuesday night.
“We were just flat (on Tuesday).”
The Eagles had 15 hits in the loss with Nioka Slater leading the way, finishing 3-4.
Amanda Griggs finished the game going 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Samantha Roy and Rachel Senn also both finished 2-4 at the plate.
The loss brings the Eagles’ record to 18-14 with two games remaining before the start of Area play.
“I thought we really came alive during the (Elba) tournament,” Hughes said.
“The girls played phenomenal defense all weekend. And the team has built up a lot of confidence thanks to playing some good teams,” the coach added.
On Thursday, GHS will head to Area rival Zion Chapel before playing host to Wicksburg next Tuesday.
Hughes said she likes where her team is heading into some of the most important games of the season.
“We are hitting the ball well right now. Every girl got a base hit (against New Brockton on Tuesday) and that’s the kind of thing you want to see towards the end of the year — it shows that we are ready.”
