The Charles Henderson varsity girls’ tennis team was in action on Monday in the 5A sectional tournament, which took play at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
The five other teams competing in the tournament were Valley, Carroll, Eufaula, Greenville and Carver.
When it was all said and done, the Trojans finished in fourth place with 23 points, behind Valley, who finished in first with 44 points, Carroll, who finished with 32 points and Greenville who finished with 26 points.
“We were in the running towards the end of singles play,” head coach Robert Lewis said Monday night. “We did better then we anticipated though. “I thought the girls did a good job of competing all day long,” the coach added.
Trojans, Chelsey Williams, Olivia Bensinger and Samantha Bhatti, all were defeated in the quarterfinals in the singles competition. No. 1 seeded Kayla LaBlue and Eleyce Herrington both lost in the finals, while fellow No. 1 seed Lerkeno Townsend lost in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, the duo of Bhatti and LaBlue fell to Greenville’s doubles team in the finals.
“This was something for our girls to build upon for next season,” Lewis said. “I am pleased with how they performed but you got to give it up to the other teams – they performed well.”
The boys varsity team will be in action on Wednesday at the tennis complex and looking for their bid to the state playoffs.
“We expect to contend,” Lewis said. “We finished undefeated in Area play this season, so we have beaten all of these teams before. But on any given day, anything can happen.”
